In CMC’s Sparks program, learning piano is an adventure full of fun, discovery, and creativity. Our teachers bring years of performing and teaching experience, and they love helping students of all ages grow their skills, gain confidence, and enjoy making music. Whether your child is just starting out or preparing for exams, lessons are tailored to each student’s needs and interests.
Julia Grizzel is a versatile performer who sings and plays piano in styles from classical to contemporary, has performed with the Boston Symphony and Opera San José. She brings over fifteen years of teaching experience to her lessons, helping students explore technique, reading music, and self-expression—all while keeping it fun.
Irene Giovannetti started playing piano at eight and also plays trumpet. After studying music in Italy, she is now pursuing a master’s degree in trumpet at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Irene loves teaching students of all ages, especially young children, and she creates lessons that are playful, engaging, and educational. Fluent in English, Italian, and Spanish, she also helps students prepare for music school exams. As Irene says, “We all carry music within us—studying music is simply the process of giving shape and order to the sounds and feelings we already hold inside.”
Zahra Rothschild has studied and performed a wide range of genres, including classical and opera, jazz, musical theater, and Latin American songs. She loves helping students find the music they enjoy, celebrating their progress, and building confidence along the way. Fluent in Spanish, she makes every lesson welcoming and inclusive. As Zahra says, “Studying music shows us there are no limits to what we’re capable of. Everyone deserves a chance to experience that!”
Janis Stuurman studied classical trumpet at the University of Southern California with Thomas Hooten, principal trumpet of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. They have taught trumpet sectionals as well as private piano and trumpet lessons, and enjoy working with students of all ages and levels.
