Welcome to Community Music Center, where music is for everyone, and has been for a century!
100 years ago, Gertrude Field opened the doors of Community Music School at 544 Capp Street. Getrude envisioned a school where students could find their voice, learn from the best teachers around, and be a part of something bigger than themselves.
Today — 100 years later — Community Music Center continues to be rooted in the Mission District of San Francisco, while being nationally recognized for our work to make music accessible to all. From our small Victorian home, CMC has branched out through new sites, robust partnerships, and community-centered programs all over San Francisco.
In March 2020, CMC undertook an unexpected and daunting challenge and built a new campus — one we didn’t expect to build — CMC Online! Thanks to the fortitude, ingenuity, and inimitable spirit of our community, our award-winning programs and thousands of music classes continue to be offered online.
Today, through remote learning platforms, CMC serves students not only in the San Francisco Bay Area, but around the world! Our exceptional faculty have brought online learning to life in fun and engaging ways with personalized music lessons and group classes. Online music lessons and group classes at CMC are community classrooms for reaching new heights of musical development and creativity. We encourage you to browse our course catalog and social media channels to learn more about the innovations of online music learning by CMC faculty.
While we miss seeing you in person, we are proud to be able to serve you online while keeping our staff and families safe. We will reopen our doors as soon as it is safe and advisable for us to do so.
CMC has seen many challenges in our hundred-year history — wartime, the Great Depression, economic hardships, and natural disasters. And despite this, our mission and our community has always seen us through. We know we will get through this difficult time together, and we thank you for being a part of the CMC Family.
