Welcome to Community Music Center, one of San Francisco’s oldest arts organizations, founded in the belief that music is for everyone.
Gertrude Field, CMC’s visionary founder, said of CMC in 1923, two years after our founding, “Our aim is to create a musical atmosphere by giving [students] the means of expression. In a word, we are devoted to an ideal–the love of the beautiful in music…because it is the greatest and most comprehensive course that can be devised for the development of human intelligence. We believe everyone has a musical sense that can be developed.”
Today — nearly a century later — Community Music Center continues to serve as a leader in arts access and education. CMC boasts a diverse student body, with 2,600 learners of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of ability studying on-site at CMC campuses, or in our many partnership programs throughout the city. CMC also boasts an exceptional faculty comprised of more than 130 skilled teachers and performers who are deeply committed to our mission of providing high quality music education to all who seek to it. Music instruction is available in 30 instruments and voice, and our ensemble programs represent a wide range of musical traditions and styles. At CMC, there’s truly something for everyone.
What makes CMC distinct is our enduring commitment to community. Although students represent a cross-section of San Francisco, CMC focuses on serving low-income families. At CMC, no one is turned away for lack of financial resources, and today CMC provides nearly $2 million in tuition assistance. CMC also offers a host of programs and concerts presented entirely free of charge. You can peruse our website or speak with our registration team to learn more about all that’s available here at CMC!
We at CMC are grateful to touch so many lives with the joy of music-learning, and we hope we’ll have the chance to welcome you to our community very soon.
