Your Chance to Explore Music

This August, CMC is inviting neighbors, families, and music enthusiasts to step inside and experience the joy of making music. Through a series of free Open House events for children, youth, and adults, participants can explore instruments, sample short classes, and get a feel for CMC’s welcoming learning environment before the Fall Quarter begins.

From playful music-making for preschoolers to hands-on introductions to piano and guitar for adults, these events are designed to spark curiosity and help participants find the right musical path—whether it’s their very first time picking up an instrument or the start of a lifelong hobby.

A Playful Start for Young Musicians

On Wednesday, August 27 from 4:00 to 5:00 PM, the Mission District Branch will open its classrooms to children ages 4–7. The youngest participants can enjoy Music for Children with teacher Beth Wilmurt, where songs, rhythm games, and movement create a joyful introduction to music.

Children ages 4–7 can try Intro to Piano in Zahra Rothschild’s Piano Lab, learning basic keyboard skills in a fun, hands-on way. Those ages 6–7 will also have the opportunity to explore the violin with Michael Long, getting their first experience with bowing and simple notes. Four-year-olds are welcome to stay in the Music for Children session or finish a bit early.

Building Skills for Ages 8–12

Immediately following, from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, we will welcome older children for two engaging sessions. In Intro to Piano, Zahra Rothschild introduces hand positions and simple melodies. In Intro to Guitar, teacher Sharon Wayne guides students through the basics of strumming and single-string playing.

These short sessions give children a chance to try different instruments before committing to a full course in the Fall Quarter.

A Richmond District Welcome

For families in the Richmond District, the CMC branch at 741 30th Avenue will host its own Open House on Sunday, August 24 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Children ages 4–7 can participate in Music for Children, while those ages 6–8 can choose Intro to Guitar for a first taste of chord shapes and easy exercises.

At this event, participants will join only one workshop, so families are encouraged to pick the session that most excites their child.

A New Beginning for Adult Learners

CMC is also thinking of beginners who may have always wanted to play an instrument but never had the chance. On Wednesday, August 27 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, at the Mission District Branch, adults are invited to explore both piano and guitar in a relaxed, no-pressure environment. Participants will rotate between Intro to Piano for Adults with Irene Giovannetti and Intro to Guitar for Adults with Sharon Wayne, each 25 minutes long, with a chance to try both instruments in a single evening.

Registration and Details

All Open House events are free, but space is limited, and advance registration is required. No prior music experience is necessary—just a willingness to explore and have fun.
