For Youth (Ages 8–18)

Intro to Piano, Guitar, Songs, and Musical Discovery!

These fun camps jumpstart your musical journey, introducing beginners to the joys of music-making, musical concepts and fundamentals of instrument playing in a fun supportive environment. CMC Sparks Camp will give students an introduction to piano and guitar, as well as activities including singing, rhythm and making music together. Using a mix of fun and interactive exercises, games, and age-appropriate repertoire, students will build confidence and learn to play and sing simple melodies and play music as an ensemble.

Ages: 8–12
Prerequisites: No instrumental or vocal experience needed.
Camp size: A maximum of 14 students working in large and small ensembles

An Ensemble Camp for Young Musicians

Make great music and new friends at Community Music Center this summer! Camp CMC offers young musicians the chance to play in small and large groups and explore many musical styles such as Latin, jazz, classical, blues, folk, rock, American song book, and klezmer. Students are grouped into ensembles by instrument and level and learn general musicianship skills with rhythm and pitch games, playing percussion instruments, singing and movement, culminating in a performance at the end of the week.

Ages: 9–14
Instruments: All instruments, and voice
Styles of music studied: Classical, Latin, jazz, other
Prerequisites: Minimum two years of study on an instrument and concurrent enrollment in private lessons (not necessarily at CMC). Vocal students may fulfill the requirement by participating in chorus or glee club. Students will be asked to send a 2–3 minute video of a scale and favorite solo piece to the camp director as a placement audition.
Camp size: A maximum of 15 students working in large and small ensembles

Latin and Jazz Music Summer Camp

This summer music camp offers young musicians a chance to play together in both small and large groups, and explore diverse musical styles including jazz and Latin music. Camp will provide an immersive experience that includes developing musicianship skills like rhythm, theory, and ear training, actively relating these concepts to styles of music they will be learning. Community-building activities will include musical games, ensemble work, introduction to improvisation and student-led activities. Family communications will be bi-lingual Spanish/English.

Ages: 11–15
Instruments: All instruments, and voice
Styles of music studied:  Latin music, jazz
Prerequisites: Minimum two years of study on an instrument and concurrent enrollment in private lessons (not necessarily at CMC). Vocal students may fulfill the requirement by participating in chorus or glee club. Students will need to submit a pre-recorded video audition demonstrating them play 3 scales (C, G, B-flat), a favorite solo piece, and performance of short excerpts provided.

Delight in Playing Chamber Music with Others

Spend the summer playing in supportive and collaborative small ensembles, coached daily by experienced CMC faculty. Students also participate in master classes, ensemble skills lessons, and independent chamber music rehearsals. An informal recital will be presented at the end of camp. Pre-formed groups as well as individuals are encouraged to apply. Individuals will be placed in an ensemble based on skill level and instrumentation available. Groups will be finalized and music sent out one month prior to our start date. 

Ages: 12–18
Instruments: Piano, Strings, Woodwinds, and Brass
Styles of music studied: Classical
Prerequisites: Minimum three years of private lessons on an instrument. As part of the application, you will need to submit a pre-recorded audio or video placement audition recording in which you perform two contrasting pieces: one slow and one fast; and a two-octave scale in the key of your choice.  You may record everything in one take or make a separate recording for each piece and scale.
Camp size: A maximum of 20 students
Location, Day and Time: Mission District Branch; Monday–Friday, June 22–26, 2026; 9:00am–12:30pm

Learn how to play and sing traditional Mexican music at Mariachi summer camp at CMC!

Students will sing and play violin, trumpet, guitar, vihuela and guitarrón in large and small ensembles, where they will have the opportunity to learn from experienced Mariachi teachers. Group activities include rhythm circle, singing in Spanish, watching Mariachi videos of famous performers, learning different styles including rancheras, sones and polkas, and experiencing a cultural immersion in the Mariachi music tradition. On the last day of camp there will be a Mariachi performance where students will showcase the repertoire they worked on during the week.

This camp will be taught bi-lingually (Spanish/English) by experienced Mariachi teachers and provide a cultural immersion in the Mariachi tradition. In addition to skills building, and learning songs from the Mariachi music tradition, CMC Sparks Mariachi students will work with CMC Mariachi students in large group musical activities. These include working on rhythms, singing in Spanish, enjoying live performance and culturally relevant arts and crafts activities, and  playing music together for the last day of camp performance.

Ages: 11–15
Instruments: Violin, Flute, Trumpet, Guitar, Vihuela, Bass, Guitarrón, and Voice
Prerequisites: Minimum one–two years of study on violin, trumpet, guitar, and bass and ideally currently in a Mariachi class at school. Guitar students will be invited to try out vihuela and bass students will be invited to try guitarrón. All of the instrumentalists will be asked to sing as well. For vocal students, previous experience singing in an ensemble is preferable.

Students will need to submit a pre-recorded video audition demonstrating them playing three different major scales (violin, flute, trumpet and bass) or playing G, D7, C, A, E7, D, G7 and F chords (guitar), a favorite solo piece, and a performance of a short song which will be sent to them in advance.

Learn how to play and sing traditional Mexican music at alongside Mariachi campers—perfect for beginners!

This group is perfect for less experienced 9–12 year olds who love to sing and want to learn basic guitar skills within the Mariachi music tradition. For guitar, students will work on several chords and traditional strumming patterns and apply them to Mariachi songs. Singers will work on intonation, pronunciation, and memorization. All students will sing and play guitar.

Have you ever wanted to sing and act?

CMC is proud to partner with Pacific Singers & Actors Workshop to offer a Musical Theater Camp this summer! The exciting Summer Performing Arts Program offers young students a chance to explore improvisation, singing and acting together in a fun, supportive environment. We’ll work individually and as a group to learn musical theater songs, short scenes and monologues and perform them on the final day of camp. You’ll work with professional musical theater actors and opera singers from the Bay Area who have appeared in Beach Blanket Babylon, at the San Francisco Opera, the San Francisco Symphony and more. We offer an immersive experience that includes vocal technique for singing, developing memorization and focusing skills, making strong acting choices, and learning how to respond creatively and quickly through improvisation. Join us and surprise yourself!

Ages: 11–14
Participants: Anyone with a great attitude ready to play and learn. Actors, vocalists and instrumentalists are welcome.
Prerequisites: Curiosity and a willingness to try something new! Nomination by an SFUSD or CMC teacher.
Location, Day and Time: Mission District Branch; Monday–Friday, July 6–10, 2026; 9:00am–3:00pm

For Adults

Jazz Intensive Summer 2026

Hone your improvisation skills, expand your repertoire, and have fun jamming with your fellow musicians! This intensive will focus on small group playing and improvisation. Students will have the opportunity to learn from expert CMC faculty through masterclasses, guided listening, small group rehearsal and performance, and jam sessions. By popular demand from last year’s workshop, more hours of playing and master classes are included in this year’s workshop.

Ages: Adults, older teens (high school students)
Instruments: Brass, woodwinds, strings and rhythm section (piano, guitar, bass and drums)
Styles of music studied: Jazz standards, be-bop, blues, Latin jazz
Prerequisites: Proficiency on an instrument, mastery of scales, and prior experience in improvisation. Admission with instructor’s consent.

Students will be asked to audition, by submitting a video (or audio recording) in which you play a jazz standard or blues, playing the melody, improvising over the form of the tune and then playing the melody. If you are a drummer or bassist, please play time for the form of the melody, improvise for a chorus and then play time for the melody. If you have a recording of yourself from a recent performance, please feel free to share that in lieu of a new recording. Some workshop groups will receive music in advance, more advanced students will not receive music in advance. Please mark in your questionnaire if you would like to receive music in advance.
