Community Music Center believes that financial status should never be an obstacle to musical study. CMC offers various financial aid options. Starred discounts cannot be combined.
Sliding scale discount*: Based on household size and monthly net income. Verification documents are required and students must re-apply annually. Download CMC’s sliding scale application (PDF). You may also request one at your nearest branch.
Private lesson/group class discount*: All tuition for group classes is reduced by 50% with concurrent enrollment in private lessons, except for Music for Children.
Multiple group class discount:* Take more than one class during a single quarter and receive a 10% discount on additional group classes.
Work Study: Work exchange for course credit is available for students over 18 who wish to earn tuition reduction. Continuing students preferred. Availability is limited.
Free classes: The Children’s Chorus is tuition-free, and CMC’s Teen Jazz Orchestra and Older Adult Choirs are completely fee-free.
Senior discount: Seniors aged 65+ can apply for a sliding scale discount. Seniors who do not qualify for the sliding scale discount will receive a 30% discount on full tuition.
Household discount: Each additional person from the same household enrolling in private lessons or group classes will be given a discount of $3.00 per lesson or class. There will be no additional discounts for those already paying minimum tuition.
Scholarships and scholarship programs: A limited number of full scholarships for private lessons are awarded to students age 18 and under based on financial need and merit. Other scholarship programs include Comprehensive Musicianship Program, Inner City Young Musicians Program, and Mission District Young Musicians Program. Auditions are generally held each spring.
Discount instrument rental: Because students must have access to their own instruments, CMC offers limited discount instrument rentals. A quarterly rental fee of $35 or $50 (depending on the rental instrument, with an additional $25 refundable deposit) is due at the time of rental. Instruments must be returned at the quarter’s end unless other arrangements are made with the registrar. Contact the registrar at the Mission District Branch for more information.
