Anything Goes Chorus I

Beginning singers, this is a fun and supportive environment for learning basic vocal technique, fundamentals of breathing and supporting your tone, note reading, and simple two and three part harmony. This class is designed for singers with little to no experience. It is focused on group singing, but also allows for attention to individual needs.

Anything Goes Chorus II
Experienced singers, harmonize in a variety of musical styles and continue developing your vocal technique and sight reading skills. This is a chorus for vocalists who love to sing and enjoy interacting with others. There is a concert at the end of each quarter.

Argentine Tango Dance
“Tango is about listening and moving as one in each other’s arms.”

Join award-winning teacher Sonja Riket, as she helps you connect with yourself, your partners and the beautiful, rich Tango music from the Golden Era (1930-40’s). With the basic steps of the three styles and rhythms of the Argentine Tango, we will learn how to feel the music in our bodies and express it through our movements in an improvisational spirit. Cultural and historical elements will be woven into the teachings.

Towards the end of the quarter, we will collaborate with the CMC Tango Ensemble and practice our dancing to their live music in the CMC Concert Hall.

Recreate the immortal music of the Beatles while developing essential skills for ensemble playing! In preparation for a performance the class will rehearse songs from the Beatles storied repertoire and explore the riffs, licks, and songwriting that defined a generation. Beginning Jazz Improvisation
Learn basic concepts, terminology and strategies for jazz improvisation and develop a repertoire along the way. You will be introduced to the blues and diminished scales and the seven modes of a major scale, focusing on the mixolydian and dorian modes. We will dedicate time to ear training exercises and work on jazz standards as a group.

Blues Workshop
Develop ensemble skills, such as soloing and accompanying, while you build a repertoire of songs to prepare for performances. This workshop will cover chords, progressions, scales, patterns, and licks found in a variety of blues styles.

Chamber Music Ensembles
Whether you are an advanced beginner or an accomplished amateur musician, CMC’s chamber music program offers an opportunity to develop your musicianship and technique as well as the chance to play with others. Groups are composed of two to five students of compatible levels. Advanced beginners and intermediate students will focus on developing basic ensemble skills, intonation, tone quality, and rhythmic accuracy. Advanced students will study important aspects of ensemble playing, including interpretation and performance techniques.

Prerequisites: Students should have at least two years of experience playing their instrument. Placement auditions for new students take place at the beginning of each quarter in order to create groups who play at similar levels. The CMC Cantabile Choir New this year!
Calling all experienced, classical singers! We are forming a new and dynamic classical choir this year at Community Music Center. We’ll work on phrasing, pronunciation, tuning, dynamics, and stylistic nuances of four-part choral repertoire from around the world — from Renaissance to Contemporary musical styles. The instructor, Martha Rodríguez-Salazar, has an extensive background as a choral singer and director in Mexico City and San Francisco. There will be at least one concert at the end of each quarter.

Ages: Ages 13 and up

Prerequisites: Ability to read music and some choral experience. Entrance by audition.

Cuban Salsa Ensemble
Learn to play Cuban salsa, charanga and other Afro-Cuban popular music in an ensemble setting. Play cha-cha-chá, danzón, guaracha, bolero, son and other Afro-Cuban dance music styles. During the course of the class, students will have the opportunity to develop improvisational skills and deepen their understanding of diverse Afro-Cuban popular music forms. Emphasis will be given to the study of “clave” (a key Afro-Cuban rhythmic concept) and how it relates to each instrument, and to the style performed. The Cuban Salsa Ensemble is a performance oriented ensemble. There will be winter and spring performances at CMC and in the community as opportunities arise.

Learn interpretation and performance techniques for playing western early music. This class will cover the evolution of harmonic progressions, musical forms, and styles of ornamentation throughout different periods and countries. The ensemble performs each December in a Winter Celebration concert and each June in a concert themed Baroque and Beyond.

Djangology 101 New this year!
Step into the world of Parisian Hot Jazz circa 1935 with this comprehensive course for beginning to intermediate students. Learn some of the most important repertoire in what has come to be called “Gypsy Jazz,” as your instructor guides you through the history and techniques that distinguish this genre. We will focus on the compositions and recordings of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, along with a brief survey of their most notable predecessors and successors. Topics include rhythmic, harmonic and melodic applications; improvising tips and tricks; and history and theory analysis.

Hungarian Folk Singing
Learn beautiful Hungarian folk songs from Transylvanian villages. We will learn Hungarian pronunciation, chest voice singing, ornamentation, text and translation, and the wonderful melodies using recordings of local village singers. Come dive into the world of Eastern European folk music and the joy of singing together!

The CMC Jazz Ensemble
Explore a standard jazz repertoire in a dynamic, participatory setting. The Jazz Ensemble plays the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard and others with emphasis on how to communicate in an ensemble, improvise, and support each other on the band stand. The class will also cover phrasing, groove and dynamics to make this music come alive. There will be a culminating performance at Community Music Center at the end of each quarter.

Latin Percussion Ensemble
Develop a solid foundation on all of the major Latin percussion instruments through various musical styles and rhythms, including son, salsa, cumbia, merengue, bachata, Brazilian and timba. Learn technique on congas, bongos, timbales, bells, and additional minor percussion instruments. The class will explore soloing techniques and typical breaks, song forms, team work, and musicianship. Students will also work on singing while playing percussion. This class provides a good foundation for the Cuban Salsa Ensemble.

Singing Rounds & Canons
Singing rounds and canons is an easy way to get started singing in a group. Think “the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts.” Ok, this isn’t a math class, but if you think that 1 + 1 + 1 = 10, you’ve got the idea. Three of us each singing a simple part we first learn all together turns into a complex harmonic wonder. There are very simple rounds (such as Row, Row, Row Your Boat) and incredibly complex ones by great composers.

Explore the unique style and techniques of Argentine tango. Students will use arrangements of classic tangos to learn musical, rhythmic and stylistic elements of tango performance practice and ensemble playing. Students will also learn a form of tango improvisation called “A La Parrilla.”

The Vocal Harmony Workshop will focus on acapella and barbershop singing styles and use improvised singing circle exercises for group vocal development. This class is meant to inspire beginners to discover their natural born vocal abilities, and to encourage more experienced singers to continue developing theirs.
