Concert Hall Manager

POSITION SUMMARY
The Hall Manager position at Community Music Center will be a part of the CMC Hall Manager Team, working in support of the registration team, and will be the onsite representative of CMC during events in the Concert & Recital Halls. You will be the first person welcoming renters onsite and will help ensure that renters have the best experience possible at CMC. Hall Managers are scheduled on an as-needed basis during CMC performances and Hall rentals, with a minimum four-hour shift.

We are a nonprofit institution founded in 1921 with branches in the Mission District, Richmond Districts, and at partnership sites throughout San Francisco serving 3,500 students annually. Our expanded campus at our Mission District Branch, including a newly built Recital Hall, opened in January 2024.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Opening & Closing Campus

  • Open and close the campus, developing a deep knowledge of our building’s operations and systems (training will be provided).
  • Provide renters with access to equipment and facilities.
  • Operate the alarm systems and make sure that the campus is secure using key cards and keys. Set up and break down chairs and tables for events.
  • Operate CMC’s computer-controlled stage lighting system

Communications

  • Receive information from and report to CMC Operations team concerning each rental, before and after each event.
  • Relay messages promptly to relevant parties in case of emergencies.
  • Welcome and speak directly with each renter about their specific needs and set up to ensure their event goes as smoothly as possible
  • Continue to be in conversation with them and help them throughout their entire rental experience
  • Stay in close contact with the CMC Receptionist when on site.

Equipment Management

  • Set up portable speakers, microphones and music stands.
  • Move amplifiers, drums and pianos (on casters) to optimal positions

Administrative & Customer Service Tasks:

  • Create a welcoming, hospitable and positive atmosphere for each event
  • Resolve issues or escalate them to the appropriate onsite staff or CMC Operations staff when necessary
  • Collect payments or reference rental agreements when necessary
  • Learn and enact CMC’s de-escalation procedure and first aid procedure.
  • Fill out event report with details at the end of each event

Promotion and Marketing Assistance

  •  Take pictures during the event and complete a report following each event.
  • Set up marketing tables at events and be knowledgeable of CMC promotional materials
  • Make welcoming announcements to audiences with information provided by Operations and Marketing

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of music equipment and music event production
  • Ability to carry over 40 lbs required
  • Positive attitude in a busy environment
  • Candidates fluent in both English and Spanish preferred

Working conditions: This is a part-time, exempt, in-person position. Performance Hall Managers are scheduled on an as needed basis, with a 4 hour minimum shift.

Compensation: This is a part-time position with an hourly rate of $23.00

Neighborhood Choir Program Choir Director

Direct a Community Choir at Openhouse as part of Community Music Center’s Neighborhood Choir Program for Older Adults & Adults with Disabilities that includes 17 choirs at San Francisco senior and neighborhood centers.

This choir for older adults and adults with disabilities is a collaboration between Community Music Center and Openhouse SF, whose mission is to enable San Francisco Bay Area LGBTQ+ seniors to overcome the unique challenges they face as they age by providing housing, direct services and community programs. The choir sings an evolving variety of styles including popular songs, show tunes, cabaret, jazz, and traditional choral arrangements. Choir members practice, sing, help organize performances, and perform in the community.

CMC developed its Neighborhood Choir Program to provide the many personal, social, artistic and quality of life benefits that musical activity can bring to older adults. Choirs are tuition-free choirs and are designed specifically for older adults (ages 60 and above). Learn more about CMC’s Neighborhood Choir Program here.

Start Date: October 2025, with a training prior.

Schedule: Tuesdays: 11:00am – 12:30pm at Openhouse, 75 Laguna Street, San Francisco

Position purpose:
To direct a choir(s) of older adults including developing repertoire, conducting choir rehearsals, coordinating with an accompanist, preparing participants for performances and participating in evaluation. The Choir Director will inspire the participants and set a tone for fun and friendly engagement through music. The position reports to CMC’s Program Director and is supported by and works with a project team including an accompanist, the Neighborhood Choir Coordinator, and partner sites involved in the program. Training will be provided on issues related to choral singing and older voices and the methods of this project.

Principal Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop culturally relevant repertoire for a Community Choir(s) for older adults in conjunction with the project team.
  • Train, rehearse and direct the Community Choir(s) including vocal/physical warm ups, learning music and preparing for public performance (in person, online and hybrid formats as needed).
  • Support opportunities for socializing among choir participants including at rehearsal breaks and potlucks after performances.
  • Take attendance at each choir session, ensure choir members sign in and following up with choir members who miss rehearsals.
  • Work with CMC Neighborhood Choir Coordinator to coordinate details for the Choir’s public performances
  • Work with accompanist to prepare music
  • Work with CMC Neighborhood Choir Coordinator to supply written lyrics and music for participants
  • Develop positive relationships with the choir and the project team through effective and timely oral and written interpersonal communications
  • Arrange for a substitute Choir Director in his or her absence
  • Participate in evaluation process of Choir(s)

 

Qualifications:

  • Choral conducting experience required
  • Knowledge of choral music and experience with a variety of musical styles and traditions
  • Ability to arrange and transcribe music for chorus, facilitating growth in repertory suited to and reflective of the Choir community
  • Ability to develop strong working relationship with an accompanist
  • Energetic, with a willingness to learn from the senior community
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness of cultural background(s) of chorus members
  • Excellent people skills, good communicator
  • Problem solver who is able to kindly and firmly resolve conflict
  • Able to work with diverse range of musical abilities and sensitivity to issues related to older voices
  • Punctuality

 

Compensation: Per session, payment is 2 hours at CMC Group Rate ($50/hour) and 1 hour of Prep at CMC Private Lesson Rate ($47/hour)

  • Accompany the Choir Director for recordings of rehearsal CDs as needed.
  • Support opportunities for socializing among choir participants including at rehearsal breaks and potlucks after performances.
  • Develop positive relationships with the choir and the project team through effective and timely oral and written interpersonal communications.
  • Arrange for a substitute accompanist in his or her absence.
  • Participant in evaluation process of Choir(s)

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience accompanying choirs.
  • Ability to read charts and transpose songs as needed.
  • Ability to assist choir director as needed to sing second vocal part with choir members.
  • Excellent people skills, with a willingness to learn from the senior community.
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness of cultural background(s) of chorus members.
  • Knowledge and ability to play diverse music styles.
  • Experience working with older adults

 

Compensation: Per session, payment is 3 hours at CMC’s Private Lesson Rate ($47/hour), this includes two hours of contact time and one hour of prep.
