(2025) Mission District Young Musicians Program. Hermann Lara is a saxophonist, woodwind specialist, and composer who performs regularly throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. He has a deep affinity for Latin jazz, Afro-Caribbean traditions, and both contemporary and straight-ahead jazz. His versatility also extends to modern ensembles, including musicals, brass bands, concert orchestras, big bands, blues, funk, R&B, pop, and Peruvian marinera and processional music.
He holds a Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music, where he studied under renowned instructors Joseph Viola, Bill Pierce, and George Garzone, while also focusing on composition and arranging.
Hermann believes music should be accessible to all who love it, and that talent is cultivated through diligence rather than being purely innate. His teaching approach emphasizes self-discipline, attentiveness, resilience, and self-expression, helping each student discover their own unique musical voice.
Most of all, Hermann loves the Mission District, his birthplace, and values teaching at the very school where both he and his children began their unique journeys.
