Carly Scena

(2020). Violist Carly Scena performs extensively throughout New England and the San Francisco Bay Area. An avid chamber musician, she is the founder and artistic director of Chamber Music Falmouth, an emerging artists residency on Cape Cod, for which she was the recipient of New England Conservatory’s Spark Award for entrepreneurship.

Carly has participated in the San Francisco chapter of Music for Food, a musician-led initiative founded by Kim Kashkashian to combat food insecurity. She has performed alongside artists such as Bonnie Hampton, Ian Swenson, Gil Kalish, Kim Kashkashian, David McCarroll, Ariadne Daskalakis, Jean-Michel Fonteneau, Geoff Nuttall, and her teacher, Dimitri Murrath. She has participated in festivals such as Music at Lands End, Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music and Encore Chamber Music with the Cavani Quartet. Carly worked closely with the Colorado Quartet for several summers, studying, performing, and coaching at their quartet institute on Cape Cod, “Soundfest.”

In addition to her experience with standard chamber music repertoire, Carly has worked intensively to perform new music works. Notable performances include the Boston premiere of Gunther Schuller’s Quintet for Strings and Horn, and performances with Callithumpian Consort at NEC under Stephen Drury, for which she worked with acclaimed composers such as Timo Andres and Julian Anderson.

Apart from her classical career, Carly also works as a vocalist, performing jazz and folk music while incorporating violin improvisation. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Boston Conservatory where she studied with Rictor Noren and a Master of Music degree in viola performance from New England Conservatory, as a student of Dimitri Murrath. Continuing her studies with Mr. Murrath, Carly recently completed an Artist Certificate in chamber music from San Francisco Conservatory.
