MDYMP at Carnaval SF Festival Stage

CMC’s Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP) will perform traditional Latin music at this year’s annual favorite Carnaval San Francisco Festival, performing on the festival stage and marching in the grand parade with our contingent of musicians from our SFUSD Partners.

  • MDYMP Performance: Saturday, May 25 at 11am @ 22nd @ Harrison Street Stage
  • MDYMP in the Grand Parade: Sunday, May 26 from 9:20am–2pm

Carnaval San Francisco is a multicultural celebration of music, dance, and artistry that since 1979 has showcased Latin American culture and the talents of Mission District residents in an atmosphere of harmony and revelry. Join the FREE 2–day family festival in San Francisco’s Mission District over Memorial Day weekend — on Harrison Street between 16th and 24th Streets — and experience global cuisine, international music, dance, arts & crafts, and other fun activities and entertainment on every street corner for the entire family to enjoy. Carnaval San Francisco is the largest multi–cultural celebration on the West Coast.

The Carnaval San Francisco theme for 2024 is “Honor Indigenous Roots.” The idea of honoring indigenous heritage has always been part of our Carnaval culture. For example, every Carnaval parade is started with a blessing ceremony from local Aztec dancers, complete with the burning of copal incense to spiritually cleanse the community, accompanied by traditional drumming and dance. This ceremony is rooted in pre-Columbian practices that still have relevance today.
