We are thrilled to announce the grand opening of the CMC Mission District Expanded Campus in January 2024! This expansion marks a significant milestone for the Community Music Center, and we invite you to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion.
Come for a free, fun, and family-friendly Grand Opening Open House on February 25 from 3–5 pm. Rediscover CMC, explore our newly expanded campus, and experience a range of musical opportunities for musicians of all ages! Both kids and adults can take a free demo class, join a jam session, and enjoy outdoor performances. The Open House offers a wide variety of opportunities for instrumentalists and vocalists in jazz, Latin, classical, rock, R&B, —from young beginners to experienced players. Bring your friends, family, and instrument and join us for a musical celebration!
Find the scheduled list of classes, jams, and performances below. Please not that space in demo classes is limited. Sign-ups for individual classes will happen on the day of the event, first-come first-served.

For Youth: Unlock the World of Music with Hands-On Classes
Provide your little ones with a gateway into the world of music through demo classes:
Introduction to Piano (ages 7 –10) with Zahra Rothschild
3:00–4:00pm
This workshop is a demo class for the CMC Sparks beginning group piano classes – a great introduction to piano for youngsters! Keyboards will be provided. Parents are welcome!
Limit of 6 students for this hands-on class. Others may sign up to observe (limit of 6 children with their parents plus 6 more)
Introduction to Guitar (ages 8–12) with Jon Vivian Sharp
3:00–4:00pm
This workshop is a demo class for the CMC Sparks beginning group guitar classes – a great introduction to guitar! Please bring a guitar if you have one, guitars will be available for those who need one. Parents are welcome!

Music for Children (ages 4–7) with Beth Wilmurt
3:00–4:00pm and 4:00–5:00pm
This workshop is a demo class for CMC’s Music for Children class. Children do rhythm games, singing, creative movement, musical play and are introduced to instruments, giving a fun positive and successful musical experience inspiring a lifelong love of music. Parents are welcome!

Rock and Pop Music Jam Session (ages 9 –14) with Zahra Rothschild
4:00–5:00pm
This workshop is a demo class for CMC’s Rock and Pop Music Jam which has sections for 9 – 11 year olds and 11- 14 year olds. CMC will have a keyboard, drumset, bass and guitar amps, but please each student should bring the instrument they plan to play. This workshop and class is a great first band opportunity for youth who have been studying their instrument for a couple of years.

For Older Teens & Adults: A Symphony of Learning Opportunities
Explore a variety of workshops and jam sessions tailored for grown-ups, older teens, and more experienced players:
Intro to Latin American Guitar Styles with Marcelo Puig
3:00–4:00pm
This workshop is an introduction to Latin American guitar styles. It gives an idea of what is possible to learn in private guitar lessons at CMC. These guitar styles could be useful for playing in various CMC Latin Music Ensembles, that play Tango, Mariachi, Latin American Folk and Cuban music. Please bring a guitar for this workshop.

Group Guitar Jam and Sing Along with Erik Pearson
4:00–5:00pm
This workshop is a demo class for a group guitar class for adults that starts in CMC’s spring quarter. Learn songs, and play and sing them together as a group.

Beginning Voice Workshop with Michael Mohammed

This class is a demo class for CMC’s Beginning Voice Workshop in which students learn beginning vocal technique and interpretive skills in a fun group setting.

Vocal Harmony Workshop with Maestro and Nola Curtis

This class is a demo class for CMC’s Vocal Harmony class in which students learn basic singing techniques and how to harmonize others.

Songs of Soul & R&B with Clif Payne
4:00–5:00pm
This class is a demo class for CMC’s Songs of Soul & R&B in which voice students learn classic Soul and R&B songs as both soloists and background singers.

Piano Lab: Jazz Voicings and Latin Montunos with Erick Peralta
4:00–5:00pm
This class is a demo of material covered in two separate adult piano labs at CMC. Part of the workshop will focus on jazz voicings for piano and additionally the workshop will focus on the typical role for piano in Latin music, exploring common harmonic and rhythmic patterns for piano. Keyboards will be provided.

Jazz Jam Session with Erick Peralta
3:00–4:00pm
This jam session will be an opportunity for musicians to come together to play jazz standards. Piano, trapset, upright bass, guitar and bass amps will be provided. Musicians should otherwise bring their own instruments. This jam gives a window into the style of music played in CMC’s various Jazz Ensembles in which students learn repertoire, build improvisational and ensemble skills.
Limit of 15 people for this jam session, with room for 50 observers.
Cuban Music Jam Session with Tregar Otton
4:00–5:00pm
This jam session will be an opportunity for musicians to come together to play several standards in Cuban music. Piano, congas, timbales and bass and guitar amps will be provided. Musicians should otherwise bring their own instruments. This jam gives a window into the style of music played in CMC’s Cuban Charanga Ensemble and Cuban Music Fundamentals classes.
Limit of 15 people for this jam session, with room for 50 observers.
