CMC students are sharing their talents all around San Francisco this fall, performing at community events that celebrate art, culture, and connection. These performances give our students a special opportunity to share what they have learned, build confidence, and bring joy to others through music.
Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP) at Paseo Artístico
On October 11, students from the Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP) performed as part of Paseo Artístico: History Matters in the Mission (2010–2020). Their lively set of Latin music filled the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District, adding to an afternoon of visual art, poetry, dance, and film celebrating the Mission’s stories and movements of the last decade. The event, co-presented by many neighborhood arts organizations, highlighted how young musicians can keep local culture alive through performance.
Songs & Stories Intergenerational Choir: Día de los Muertos Performance
On Saturday, November 1, from 1 to 3 p.m., the Songs & Stories Intergenerational Choir presented by CMC and Ruth’s Table will perform at 3160 21st Street. Led by Beth Wilmurt and Rowena Richie, this mixed-age ensemble will present Songs and Stories: The After Party, celebrating Día de los Muertos through music, storytelling, and art. The event will include a community altar, dance, drag performance, and mural-making. It will be free and open to all, offering a beautiful way to honor memory and joy in community.
Mariachi Instrument Petting Zoo at Davies Symphony Hall
CMC will also host its first Mariachi Instrument Petting Zoo during the pre-concert festivities for the San Francisco Symphony’s Día de los Muertos celebration. Led by CMC’s Mariachi faculty member Daphne González Cambambia, children and adults alike will have a chance to try traditional Mariachi instruments including the guitar, vihuela, guitarrón, and violin with guidance from experienced players. It will be a fun and hands-on way to experience the sounds of Mariachi music up close.
These performances reflect what CMC is all about: making music a part of everyday life and every neighborhood. As Program Director Sylvia Sherman shared after a recent event, “Making our neighborhoods an expanded stage for CMC was very exciting! I loved seeing our students perform and feel part of supporting our wonderful community while sharing their music.”
