For four decades, Ellen Robinson has been the guiding force behind the Anything Goes Chorus (AGC), bringing hundreds of singers together to experience the transformative power of music. As she celebrates 40 years of teaching at CMC and beyond, Ellen reflects on the joy of building a singing community, overcoming challenges, and the continued evolution of AGC.
Since founding Anything Goes Chorus in 1980, Ellen has nurtured a space where singers of all backgrounds and experience levels can find their voices. The chorus, which has both CMC and East Bay branches, has become more than just a music group—it’s a family.
“One of the many joys of teaching AGC is being able to bring hundreds of students together over the years and helping them become a family of singers,” Ellen shares. “They start to count on each other, and this enhances the quality of their voices and the blending of harmonies.”
Many AGC members have been part of the chorus for over a decade, some even 20+ years. The friendships and connections formed within the group highlight the power of communal singing. “A chorus is a wonderful model for the world,” Ellen explains. “It requires that each person listens to everyone else, makes room for differences, and blends their voice into a beautiful group sound that is more than the sum of the separate voices.”
Ellen’s career has spanned tumultuous times—from the AIDS crisis to wars, major earthquakes, devastating fires, political upheavals, and even a global pandemic. Through it all, the chorus has remained a constant source of comfort and resilience.
“Singing together is so uplifting and good for the spirit,” she says. “One of the most challenging experiences was dealing with COVID-19. Leading group singing on Zoom was incredibly difficult, but the singers were committed. It clarified the importance of the social aspect of choral singing.”
Despite the obstacles, Ellen remains grateful. “The fact that I have made my living by teaching singing and helping people find and develop their voices is very special. It has sustained me creatively, energetically, and spiritually through all the ups and downs of my life.”
As a performer, Ellen has sung across a variety of genres—including folk, rock, musical theater, a cappella, and jazz. She brings this diverse experience into AGC, ensuring each season introduces members to new musical styles.
“This keeps the rehearsals lively as students learn different rhythmic styles and broaden their knowledge about the culture and context of each genre,” Ellen explains. “It opens them up to new ways of phrasing and using their voices.”
To mark the 40th anniversary of AGC at CMC, both choruses will come together for Vocalpalooza on March 23, followed by a special recital on March 27. These performances not only celebrate the group’s history but also highlight the ongoing growth and dedication of its members.
“My students enjoy taking on challenging music and mastering it. It’s empowering for them to stretch themselves,” Ellen says. “They are proud to be in AGC and enjoy performing for their friends and family.”
Ellen hopes that AGC will continue to attract new singers while maintaining the strong sense of community that has defined it for four decades.
“For my students, I hope that the experience of being in AGC will continue to enhance their lives, and that the songs and music will spread throughout their families and beyond.”
As Ellen Robinson celebrates this remarkable milestone, it’s evident that her influence has not only shaped the voices of her students but also enriched their lives in profound ways that extend far beyond the music.
