The concert will feature new collaborative works that Rohan has been working on, as well as the premiere of a contemporary, three-movement piece for solo mridangam. Drawing on traditional and experimental techniques and approaches, the piece reflects the rhythmic soundscapes of San Francisco, both musical and non-musical, and highlights the diverse rhythmic traditions that contribute to one of the most cosmopolitan music scenes in the world. The piece reflects inspiration from many iconic and lesser-known locations in San Francisco, and the unique soundscapes that they evoke. This new work represents one of the first experimental, programmatic, and socially-inspired compositions for mridangam, thereby expanding the traditional Indian musical aesthetic and repertoire, and sounding a new perspective about life in San Francisco.
Indian Rhythm and Hand Drumming Workshops will precede the premiere of the new work. Workshops will take place on April 1, 29 from 3:00 – 4:00 pm at CMC’s Mission District Branch.
