Shenson Faculty Concert Series: Text(ures): Works for Viola & Strings with Angie Zheng

“Text(ures): Works for Viola & Strings,” features five single-movement works drawing from oral traditions, landscape-inspired poetry and folk melodies by Bright Sheng, Caroline Shaw, Pauline Oliveros, Amy Beach, and Anne Leilehua Lanzilotti. The viola acts as a narrative voice, guiding listeners across shifting musical terrain tracing a journey of remembering, wandering and longing. Restrained instrumentation set amongst late-romantic and contemporary harmonic language allows resonance, color, and silence to take on active roles.

Angie Zheng 郑晴 is a musician, teacher, and artist from Shanghai. Her body of work in many mediums find common ground exploring memory, fleeting, and cyclical forms. She will be joined by Zoe Lee, Michael Long, Sung Choi, and Aaron Keller for this reflective night of listening.

Featured Musicians:
Michael Long, violin (CMC Faculty)
Aaron Keller, violin
Sung Choi, cello
Zoe Lee, cello & piano (CMC Faculty)

About the Shenson Faculty Concert Series

The Shenson Faculty Concert Series returns this summer with inspiring concerts spotlighting CMC talented faculty members. Each year, the Shenson Foundation sponsors free community concerts for CMC faculty music projects to support CMC Faculty as performing artists and ensure their work on stage is shared and celebrated beyond the classroom and out in our community.

This year’s presenters will highlight a wide variety of musical styles, techniques, and creative inspirations, including original compositions, hidden gems, and traditions from around the globe—using music as a tool for exploring culture, identity, history, and artistic experimentation. Collaborators and guest artists also feature fellow CMC faculty and alumni!

Meet this summer’s talented faculty performers:

  • June 25 – Marcus Shelby |  A Tribute to John Lewis & Modern Jazz Quartet
  • July 23 –  Omar Ledezma Jr |  Azesu: Music of the Americas
  • August 6 – Angie Zheng | Text(ures): Music for Viola and Strings
  • August 13 – Jon Jang | Jang Journeys: The Music of Jon Jang in the Making of Asian America

About the Performers:

Angie Zheng is a musician and designer currently based in San Francisco. Originally from Shanghai, she moved to Los Angeles in 2018 to study viola with Che-Yen Chen at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. In 2022, she graduated from UCLA with degrees in Viola Performance and Architecture, as well as a minor in Food Studies.

Angie enjoys helping students develop a love for music, discover joy in learning new techniques and playing their instruments, and, most importantly, cultivate a healthy and sustainable relationship with both music and their instruments, while exploring its relevance in their everyday lives.
