Finding Community: Monix’s Story

Monix’s voice resonates not just in harmony with others but with a deep sense of belonging. As a member of New Voices Bay Area TIGQ Chorus, a mixed-voice choral ensemble for transgender, intersex, and gender-queer singers, Monix began their journey as a way to connect with a community, and it has since become an important part of their life.

“I didn’t have any musical background,” Monix admits, reflecting on the moment they joined. It wasn’t a deep knowledge of music that drew them in but a suggestion from a friend who knew the power of group singing. “There’s something about it that’s good, even if music isn’t necessarily something you know a lot about,” they recall. What followed was an experience that surprised and moved Monix in ways they hadn’t anticipated.

The first concert Monix participated in was on Trans Day of Remembrance, a profoundly emotional event for both the performers and the audience. “I was so surprised and impacted by the reaction from the audience… it’s such a beautiful experience to participate with other folks and sing, and to not have to know that much about it. I’ve been learning along the way,” Monix shares. This openness to learning, the joy of discovery, and the camaraderie of the chorus have become integral to Monix’s connection with the ensemble.

For Monix, joining New Voices Bay Area didn’t just improve their voice; it deepened their relationship with it. “I didn’t think I could achieve certain ranges, but now I know I can. I’ve learned that I actually sound good when I have others to sing with, and that was really encouraging.” The newfound confidence has even spilled into their daily life—now Monix finds themselves singing while walking down the street.

Beyond the music, New Voices Bay Area is a family. “There’s a joy that comes with producing music in a group… it means camaraderie, kindred spirits, community.” The connections made through singing go beyond the rehearsal room. “We laugh together. We cry together. It creates incredible bonds. Even if you don’t know people well, you know you can rely on them.”

Monix also reflects on how the chorus became a source of support during one of the most challenging times in their life. “I went through something very difficult this past year, and I don’t think I could have gotten through it without this chorus.” There was a particular song, with lyrics about seeing the light of a brand new morning, that helped Monix get through the difficult times.“When it got to be too much, I would grab those lyrics and belt it out. It got me through one of the hardest years of my life.”

Monix’s story with New Voices Bay Area is not just about honing their musical skills but about finding a sense of belonging—a space where they can grow, connect, and support others through music. For those considering joining, Monix has simple advice: “Come on in. You’ll love it, and you don’t have to know music. You can learn as you go, and there’s people to help you along the way.”
