    This Electric Blues workshop will introduce students to the wide variety of blues grooves that one might encounter at a blues jam. We'll listen and learn from the recordings performed by the original artists that define a particular groove e.g., a Magic Sam boogie, an Albert King blues rhumba/mambo, a Jimmy Reed shuffle, a B.B. King jump blues, a Muddy Waters 'mojo' groove, a Lowell Fulson 'tramp' groove, and much more. Ensemble playing and individual improvisation will be encouraged with a focus on group interaction and the supporting role each individual instrument plays in establishing the groove.     An Ensemble Camp for Young Musicians Make great music and new friends at Community Music Center this summer! Camp CMC offers young musicians the chance to play in small and large groups and explore many musical styles such as Latin, jazz, classical, blues, folk, rock, American songbook, and klezmer. Students are grouped into ensembles by instrument and level and learn general musicianship skills with rhythm and pitch games, playing percussion instruments, singing and movement, culminating in a performance at the end of the week. Ages: 9–14 Instruments: All instruments, and voice Styles of music studied: Classical, Latin, jazz, other Prerequisites: Minimum two years of study on an instrument and concurrent enrollment in private lessons (not necessarily at CMC). Vocal students may fulfill the requirement by participating in chorus or glee club. Students will be asked to send a 2–3 minute video of a scale and favorite solo piece to the camp director as a placement audition.     Whether you are an advanced beginner or an accomplished amateur musician, CMC’s chamber music program offers an opportunity to develop your musicianship and technique as well as the chance to play with others. Groups are composed of three to five students of compatible levels. Advanced beginners and intermediate students will focus on developing basic ensemble skills, intonation, tone quality, and rhythmic accuracy. Advanced students will study important aspects of ensemble playing, including interpretation and performance techniques. For those who are new to music we have an Intro to Chamber Music class to learn the various ways chamber musicians communicate, listening tuning and ensemble skills necessary for a successful chamber experience. Groups are formed for students of varying degrees of experience and can include piano, strings, and winds musicians This is a great opportunity to create lasting friendships as well as great performing groups! Pre-formed groups are highly encouraged! Ensembles who would like to perform will have the opportunity to sign up for a regular CMC recital. Placement auditions for new students take place at the beginning of each quarter in order to create groups who play at similar levels.     JAZZ INTENSIVE SUMMER 2026 Hone your improvisation skills, expand your repertoire, and have fun jamming with your fellow musicians! This intensive will focus on small group playing and improvisation. Students will have the opportunity to learn from CMC faculty through masterclasses, guided listening, small group rehearsal and performance, and jam sessions. By popular demand from last year’s intensive, more hours of playing and master classes are included in this year’s workshop. Students will be asked to audition, by submitting a video (or audio recording) in which you play a jazz standard or blues, playing the melody, improvising over the form of the tune and then playing the melody. If you are a drummer or bassist, please play time for the form of the melody, improvise for a chorus and then play time for the melody. If you have a recording of yourself from a recent performance, please feel free to share that in lieu of a new recording.     Jazz Today, a contemporary Jazz ensemble, invites students to explore the music of today’s hottest jazz artists from around the globe. We will draw from the repertoire of some of the most talented and creative musicians on the scene such as Robert Glasper, Esperanza Spalding, and Kamasi Washington who are honoring the tradition of this artform while also pushing the boundaries into new and unexpected territory. In addition to improvising within the framework of these compositions, we will also work extensively on creating unique and dynamic arrangements meant to solidify and expand each musician's role within the ensemble. Vocalists are also welcome and highly encouraged to join regardless of improvisation experience.     Sing your favorite soul and R&B songs in a classroom setting and then performing those songs at an end-of-quarter concert! This is a workshop-style class taught by Bay Area vocal master Clif Payne in which students learn their favorite Soul/R&B songs as both soloists and background singers. Songs will include the genre's classic songs from back-in-the-day represented by artists such as Sam Cook, Aretha, Sly & The Family Stone, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson to today's current hits as represented by artists such as Victoria Monet, GIVEON, Kehlani, Khalid and Daniel Caesar.Not familiar with Soul/R&B? Not a problem! This class will not only define Soul/R&B, but class will also show how it continues to influence all of pop music—we'll even transform your favorite pop song into a soul or R&B song. A special focus will be on artists who are redefining Soul and R&B by mixing their songs with pop, electronic dance, jazz, neo-soul and hip-hop. That will include artists such as SZA, Leon Thomas, PARTYNEXTDOOR and the K-pop/R&B scene.Students will learn proper warm-up exercises and vocal technique, ensemble singing, vocal improvisation, harmony, microphone technique, performance presentation and song interpretation. Clif will also help you find the appropriate keys for your songs and utilize your own individual abilities and personality as style enhancers.     An ensemble just for guitarists! This unique class features repertoire from a wide variety of styles. Ensemble parts will include melodic lines in 3-4 part harmony, musical lines that complement the melody, fills, chord voicings, rhythmic accompaniment, and bass line movement. This class will incorporate technique, fretboard knowledge and music theory and improvisation as it relates to the guitar.     This class will serve as an introduction to core elements of jazz music. We’ll learn about the essential roles of each member in a jazz ensemble, such as walking bass lines, drum grooves, the role of comping, and interpretation of a melody. We’ll examine integral building blocks of jazz harmony, how to approach learning your first tunes, understanding a lead sheet, as well as how to go about preparing for improvisation.The goal of this class is to provide you with skills that will enhance your understanding of the language, assist in making music with others, and enable you to be free to improvise.This class prepares you for CMC Jazz Ensembles.     In this ensemble, students will learn and apply instrument-appropriate roles, to perform and improvise within a Latin jazz context, drawing from traditions from the Caribbean and Latin America. Students will gain experience in interpreting traditional and contemporary Latin jazz repertoire that draws from son, guaracha, cha-cha-cha, mambo, bembe from Cuba, bomba, plena, jibaro from Puerto Rico, samba, partido alto, choro from Brazil, and more.     The following tuition-free choirs are designed specifically for older adults (ages 60 and above) and/or persons 18 years of age or older with a disability.Tuition for these choirs is fully covered by a scholarship grant, making them free to students.     Latin and Jazz Music This summer music camp offers young musicians a chance to play together in both small and large groups, and explore diverse musical styles including jazz and Latin music. Camp will provide an immersive experience that includes developing musicianship skills like rhythm, theory, and ear training, actively relating these concepts to styles of music they will be learning. Community-building activities will include musical games, ensemble work, introduction to improvisation and student-led activities.
