CMC joins Acción Latina’s community art stroll Paseo Artístico for a celebration of arts, culture, and neighborhood vibrancy in the Mission District up and down 24th Street with a performance by students in the Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP) and original members from Los Peludos, Miguel Govea and Enrique Ramirez. The group will perform original pieces by both Los Peludos and MDYMP, along with Capoeira performance by Omulu Capoeira.

This month’s festivities, The 80s Matter in the Mission, pay tribute to the Latinx organizers and artists that responded to the AIDS epidemic and the immigration of Central American refugees to San Francisco’s Mission District in the 1980s. We have chosen to address this pivotal decade, the same way that our community dealt with the overwhelming loss of their home country, lovers, friends and family– then and now – by celebrating the vibrant ritual of Día de los Muertos or Día de los Difuntos (Day of the Dead). This tradition invites us to publicly and collectively mourn what is gone, remember the beauty that surrounds us, and continue organizing to improve our communities.
