What kind of music do you enjoy?
We listen mostly to classical music and opera, but also have a lot of jazz in our music collection.  We have KDFC radio on all the time.

Do either of you have musical training?
Karl plays the cello and piano.  He studies cello with Poppea Dorsam and studied piano with Jennifer Peringer – both at CMC.  We have a beautiful Baldwin grand piano in our living room that belonged to Karl’s mother.  It was built in 1906, the year his mother was born.  Karl played violin as a child.  Ann likes to listen to music.

How did you first hear about CMC?  (…When was that?)
Karl met Steve Shapiro (CMC’s Executive Director Emeritus) in the early 1980’s when Karl was Chief of Surgery at Kaiser Hospital.  Karl’s interest in music brought us closer to the music center.  The first event we attended was a “Joy of Making Music” celebration at Greens Restaurant.  We were impressed with the way CMC carried out its mission to make music lessons available to everyone.

When and how did you first become involved in the music center?
After Karl retired he started taking cello lessons at CMC with Poppy.

Karl, what prompted you to join the Board?
Steve was aware of Karl’s interest in music, and asked Karl to join the Board when he retired, which was in 1999.

How long did you serve?
From 1999 through 2011.

What do you think are CMC’s most important contributions to the community?
CMC’s outreach to the whole community is important.  It gives anyone who wants to have access to music lessons the opportunity to make music, and it gives all of us a chance to hear music.

We are very excited about the new building, which will increase CMC’s capacity for new students.  We are looking forward to CMC’s meeting its goal of paying off the mortgage and renovating the new building.

What inspired you to make a legacy gift to CMC?
CMC is already older than we are, and we wanted to help insure that CMC survives.  (So many organizations do not.)  CMC has a long history and it is also forward-looking.  We wanted to do our small part.

Would you be willing to describe the kind of gift you included in your estate plan?
We have named CMC as a beneficiary in our will.

Did you receive legal or other advice to help you plan your gift?
It was part of our general estate planning process, with our own legal advisors.

Did CMC provide any assistance or advice to help you plan your gift?
No, additional advice wasn’t needed.
